What is an average river?
It is obviously difficult to classify the diversity of our rivers but let us try nevertheless to give some characteristics of what one can call an average river to release from it the material necessary to fish this type of environment.
An average river is already defined by the fact that one can generally reach any fishing station from a bank in fly fishing . Fishing can therefore be practiced either from the shore or by wading when entering the water.
Even when wading, the vegetation on the banks is closer and it is therefore more necessary to precisely control your forward and backward throw than in a larger river.
As the water depth is often moderate, it may be possible to get closer to most positions which makes long distance casting less useful. Discretion is required and in a calm zone, without current, it is necessary to fish carefully.
Which rod to choose?
A rod of moderate length is preferable so as not to become cumbersome in an area covered by vegetation. A height of 8 to 9 feet may be advised.
A moderate action rod may be more enjoyable and just as effective at medium and short range as a fast action rod. It will protect your leader tip well against breakage on a good catch. A good quality model will give you the small reserve of power to extend the cast when necessary, when a discreet approach is impossible. Some will nevertheless prefer fast action rods in moderate lengths and low powers: high quality is then necessary to avoid stiff rods unsuitable for this type of fishing.
A power of #4 is often quite suitable and it is possible to choose a number less (#3) for more discretion or #5 if you are looking for versatility and only want to have one rod. Moderate action #3 rods will allow ultra fine fishing with micro flies and very fine leaders (8/100 to 10/100).
In these fairly short sizes and low power, it is possible to find light rods at a reasonable price which is very pleasant and will reduce your fatigue.
Which reel is suitable?
A classic reel light enough but of good quality so as not to lose the pleasure of a light rod will suit very well.
Which silk to choose?
A fine silk is discreet #3 or #4 is to be used. A Double Tapper profile will be well suited to facilitate rolling casts, very useful in the presence of vegetation. A fine natural line can be a plus both for its qualities of discretion and also for the pleasure of fishing with traditional equipment of good quality!
Which leader to use?
The choice of leader can be very variable depending on the fishing techniques. However, the use of large leaders (3m60 and more) can be difficult on congested rivers. A classic size of 2m70 will often be more suitable, to be shortened or lengthened a little depending on the situation.
The thread used for the tip is also to be chosen for its discretion.
